'Service with a smile': Macon chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority feeds the homeless

The Macon chapter of the AKAs worked all day to honor Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy

MACON, Ga. — Many people spent Monday honoring the life and legacy of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

For one group, that meant keeping King's dream alive with a day of service by feeding the homeless at Loaves & Fishes Ministry .

"Once you give love to one another, then that love is always given to someone else," Eddie Reid said.

The Macon Alpha Kappa Alpha chapter and Loaves & Fishes Ministry worked to help the homeless.

"I'd never find anybody as nice as these people," Debra Ivey said.

They worked all day to make sure people who needed something to eat left with a full stomach.

"We do this every year in conjunction with Loaves & Fishes, as well as providing clothing with coats and jackets for the winter," said Brenda Youmas, the president of the Macon Alpha Kappa Alpha chapter.

Youmas says they have been keeping King's dream alive for close to a decade.

"He also made sure that we do, what he as a minister was called to do. The Lord said for us to serve and help others, and one of his key focuses was helping those that are in need," Youmas said.

Dozens of people like Debra Ivey came out to receive free toiletries like toothpaste, soap mouthwash, lotion and more.

"They help supply me with my needs like that," Ivey said.

Ivey says the generosity of Loaves & Fishes and the AKAs make life a little easier.

"They help me with the supplies I need to survive," Ivey said.

"Our motto is service to all mankind," said Reid.

Reid added the mission is to make sure everyone is taken care of -- not only today, but throughout the year.

"Having a giving heart, giving what we can, so that people will know that not only our sorority, there are a lot of sororities and fraternities that give service, but we give service with a smile," Reid said.
