Level 2 threat for Thursday, two rounds of storms possible

We could have a gusty storm or two Thursday, and maybe again for Friday morning.

MACON, Ga. — Look for more hot sunshine on Wednesday, with highs near 90. A couple of sprinkles will be possible through the early afternoon, but don't expect much.

A cold front will approach from the northwest on Thursday, bringing a more organized shower and thunderstorm chance across central Georgia. However, there are a lot of variables at play that will eventually drive our storm threat.

Timeline

The Storm Prediction Center has most of central Georgia in a level 2 risk for severe weather on Thursday. That threat will begin in central Georgia after noon and continue through 5-6 p.m.

The timing on these storms will be fluid. These types of systems are historically handled poorly by models - especially on the timing front. Regardless of what time they come through, I do expect the main threats for the afternoon to be damaging winds and large hail. There will be a low-end tornado risk as well.

Then overnight into Friday, another line of storms will push in west to east from Alabama.  Expect another damaging wind threat with this round of storms.

Do note that there is additional uncertainty with the overnight round of storms. Their intensity will be largely dependent on what happens through Thursday afternoon.

The cold front that comes in Friday morning will bring in cooler air for the weekend. Highs will drop down into the upper 70s and lows in the low 50s for a break from this summer weather.
