Strong storms on Thursday prompt a level 2 storm outlook across Central Georgia

The first wave will move into Central Georgia through the day on Thursday. The second wave will move in overnight into Friday morning.

Wednesday Afternoon Forecast:

Warm and humid is the forecast for the remainder of the day. Ahead of a cold front, central Georgia is located in the warm sector of a larger system, funneling warm-moist air into the viewing area. Highs today will be in the lower 90s across the viewing area. Macon has reached 88 degrees a couple of times this month, but unlike its neighbors, Macon has not reached 90 degrees. With moisture funneling into the viewing area, a sprinkle can't be ruled out.

Severe Weather Threat for Thursday and Friday Morning:

A level 2 Severe Weather Outlook is in place for all of central Georgia Thursday as multiple rounds of Mesoscale Convective System (MCS), or clusters of thunderstorms, sweep across the region.

The main threats include:

  • Gusty winds up to 60 MPH along the leading edge of the storm
  • Heavy rainfall at times, with totals up to an inch
  • A brief tornado, however, is not likely
  • Large hail embedded within some of the storms
  • Cloud-to-ground lightning

Here's a look at the timings for the first wave of severe weather:

Overnight into Friday Morning:

The same threats will be in place overnight Thursday into Friday morning. However, the intensity will depend on the timing and intensity of the first wave on Thursday. The takeaway is to have a way to receive watches and warnings overnight into Friday morning.

Cooldown Saturday Morning:

Once all the rain is gone, the cold front behind it will eventually usher colder air into the region. Temperatures waking up Saturday and Sunday morning will be in the 50's. Highs  Saturday afternoon will be in the upper 70s. Sunday afternoon, Mother's Day, will see an increase in cloud cover and humidity, but highs will be closer to 80 degrees. Rain chances return on Monday and Tuesday of next week.
